Support for Community Newspaper

An Open Letter from Rick Dunn, Director of Economic Development and Sustainability, Meander Valley Council, dated 17 June 2013.

Thanks once again for your very positive contributions at our meeting on Friday 7 June 2013, to looking at ways to re-establish a community newspaper in our region.

It is fair to say that Chris Keating, Owner and Editor of the Country Courier, was both excited about the opportunity ….. yet terrified about the potential workload required and the cost to almost double his business.

Chris wanted me to reiterate that (so not to falsely raise expectations) that he must for his own purposes do a full assessment of the viability and sustainability of running two community newspapers before making a commitment.  I’m sure that you can all understand the need for this to be worked through over the next few weeks by Chris.

To spread the word of support for the re-establishment of a community newspaper, Council booked a ½ page advert (which is attached) which was scheduled to run in last Tuesday’s edition of the Examiner Newspaper but did not.

A representative from the Examiner phoned me last Friday to inform me that they would not allow the advert to be printed in the Examiner as the adverts’ content would be promoting direct competition to the Examiner.  I indicated to the representative that the decision to discontinue Meander Valley News was entirely theirs and/or Fairfax Newspapers and the advert was a legitimate effort by Council and response to the resounding need for a community newspaper in our region.

Council have asked the Examiner to put their reasons for not running the advert in writing but to this point have refused to do so.  I will leave it up to you to make your mind up about their approach to this issue.

For now ….. please, distribute this attached advert across your email networks, business contacts and feel free to print it out and ask businesses to display it in shop windows in your main street.  We need to get the word for support out there !

As Chris committed to ….. he will be in our region to gauge support for a new paper over the next couple of weeks.Council have asked the Examiner to put their reasons for not running the advert in writing but to this point have refused to do so.  I will leave it up to you to make your mind up about their approach to this issue.
